The Pond
A small pond is nestled in a steep valley
A gnarled forest blanketing its slopes
Layers of fuzzy moss envelope each tree
In a vast land of forgotten dreams and hopes
High in the sky the sun is setting
In a glorious conflagration of reds and yellows
My presence here not worth regretting
As I gaze at the rolling fields all aglow
And notched mountains laden with newly fallen snow
A warm breeze originating from the mountainside
Smells as sweet as honeydew
And tickles my ears with a fleeting sigh
But then the faint wind grew and grew
Until the trees’ tenuous branches joined in, too
Swaying and dancing to nature’s hypnotic tune
Ripples and waves appear on the pond’s surface
Languid folds of azure blue
Frogs rest on lily pads practicing their deep hum
Developing a sound not unlike that of a sonorous bass drum
Dragonflies circle the pond and trees
Illuminating the darkening sky
With their gossamer glow as they freely soar and fly
Alongside the trees grow bushes
Fruits ripening on the many branches
I indulge in the various flavours
No matter how sweet, tart, or sour, I never forget to savour
And although each had a unique taste
Every fruit brought the same sensations – bliss and grace
As day transcends to night
And the first stars come into sight
The waxing moon shines prominently overhead
Flooding the darkness into renewed light
The sky’s peaceful rapture imitated on the pond’s clear surface
The pond resting amidst the forest of trees
In the valley and secluded from all else
Is truly magical and ostensibly at peace
